I don't recall coming across a thread with this purpose before, but if there is one, please combine them.

Have you ever had a time when you remember something from the Canon but then can't remember what story it's from?

Here's one source of help, a searchable Holmes text...

http://mrmoon.com/moonfind/holmes/

But sometimes even that won't get you the answer.

Right now I am working on our little Easter challenge. In it Holmes notices the mud on Watson's shoes and deduces from it that his workload was not very heavy that day, since he has obviously walked instead of taking a cab. I can't for the life of me find which story he does this in! Do you guys remember?

If anybody else has any "what story is that from?" questions, put 'em in this thread and we'll put our heads together and try to remember.

That's awesome! I don't know who would have the time to create a searchable Holmes...but it is certainly a worthy cause and congradulations to whoever, out there in cyberspace, made it! smile.gif

"It is simplicity itself," said he; "my eyes tell me that on the inside of your left shoe, just where the firelight strikes it, the leather is scored by six almost parallel cuts. Obviously they have been caused by someone who has very carelessly scraped round the edges of the sole in order to remove crusted mud from it. Hence, you see, my double deduction that you had been out in vile weather, and that you had a particularly malignant boot-slitting specimen of the London slavey. As to your practice, if a gentleman walks into my rooms smelling of iodoform, with a black mark of nitrate of silver upon his right forefinger, and a bulge on the side of his top hat to show where he has secreted his stethoscope, I must be dull indeed if I do not pronounce him to he an active member of the medical profession."

Is this it? From A Scandal in Bohemia.

I don't think so...when I was checking the searchable Holmes, I wondered if it had been, too, but I don't think so. Holmes actually said something like he knew Watson was busy because his shoes were clean.

The particular scene you are looking for Lady Halle occurs at the start of The Crooked Man :

Holmes chuckled to himself.

"I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson," said he. "When your round is a short one you walk, and when it is a long one you use a hansom. As I perceive that your boots, although used, are by no means dirty, I cannot doubt that you are at present busy enough to justify the hansom."

"Excellent!" I cried.

"Elementary," said he.
