Have you ever had a time when you remember something from the Canon but then can't remember what story it's from?
Here's one source of help, a searchable Holmes text...
http://mrmoon.com/moonfind/holmes/
But sometimes even that won't get you the answer.
Right now I am working on our little Easter challenge. In it Holmes notices the mud on Watson's shoes and deduces from it that his workload was not very heavy that day, since he has obviously walked instead of taking a cab. I can't for the life of me find which story he does this in! Do you guys remember?
If anybody else has any "what story is that from?" questions, put 'em in this thread and we'll put our heads together and try to remember.

That's awesome! I don't know who would have the time to create a searchable Holmes...but it is certainly a worthy cause and congradulations to whoever, out there in cyberspace, made it!

The particular scene you are looking for Lady Halle occurs at the start of The Crooked Man :
Holmes chuckled to himself.
"I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson," said he. "When your round is a short one you walk, and when it is a long one you use a hansom. As I perceive that your boots, although used, are by no means dirty, I cannot doubt that you are at present busy enough to justify the hansom."
"Excellent!" I cried.
"Elementary," said he.
