Here is the link to the Wikipedia article on Sidney Paget, featuring a photograph of Paget wearing his very own deerstalker cap:

http://en.wikipedia....ki/Sidney_Paget

As I recall, Sidney Paget also drew characters wearing deerstalker caps in stories by authors other than ACD in THE STRAND MAGAZINE.

The pattern on Paget's cap in the photograph might be a windowpane check, like the pattern that emerged in the illustrations for the stories that were collected in THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.

William Gillette wore a deerstalker as part of his stage costume in SHERLOCK HOLMES. In the early photographs from the New York production, the deerstalker featured small bills and appeared to be in a solid color fabric. By the time that Gillette was doing his farewell tours, the bills on the cap had gotten larger and the fabric was a distinct windowpane check.

The deerstalker cap that Basil Rathbone wore in HOUND & ADVENTURES was in a houndstooth check fabric. From the way it fit, it must have been custom made for him. Aesthetically, it was the best looking deerstalker that I ever saw on anyone!

As a matter of proportion, whenever you seen a deerstalker cap in a Victorian illustration, apart from the work of Sidney Paget, the bills on the caps are always small.

I would like to get a deerstalker and just walk around somewhere, to see what kind of reactions I get. Plus, it would likely be a great way to find other Sherlockians.

I own a deerstalker, but I never thought of wearing it in the course of a normal day.

If you live in the United States of America, you could wear your deerstalker cap on

National Hat Day

So if anyone asks you why you're wearing that you just reply, "It's National Hat Day. Where is YOUR hat?"

Whyever not????? laugh.gif biggrin.gif
I have two deerstalkers, and one of them is a black and white checkered one. It's to small for me.
The other is a plain brown one. It's gigantic.

I really wanna wear one to college someday...but which one? Which is the lesser of two evils??? biggrin.gif

I'd love to, but I don't think I can afford one. dry.gif So I'll just stick to my military surplus camo boonie hat with 5 stars on the band and a white feather on the side in honour of Sargent Carlos Hathcock, US Marine Corp. I wear it everywhere already! biggrin.gif

I'll have to think about this. Do I have the nerve to wear my deerstalker in public?

Of course, I always have trouble finding a hat--any hat--that fits me. My head is a little too large. Got a lot of knowledge up there, you know.

Deerstalkers are an acquired taste. They suit very few people. Brett could pull off a deerstalker but Basil was by far a top hat sort of man. And that squashy, floppy, squished THING he wears in the updated films. Yuck, yuck, yuck and DOUBLE yuck. blink.gif Was was Ms West on?

A deerstalker probably wouldn't suit me, but I don't care. People would be shocked if they knew how much I disregard my appearance. That is close to abnormal for a teenage girl. biggrin.gif
